Walking around the beautiful neighborhood of Doltso, in Kastoria is always a very pleasant experience, but the best hour to enjoy its magnificent atmosphere is when night falls, carrying with it the calmness of a different era. Doltso is an open air architecture "museum". Most of the mansions of Kastoria, that have been declared in state of preservation are gathered here. There are more than 380 houses in this condition, and reflect the prosperity and the wealth of the best times that Kastoria ever knew. The town has a long tradition in fur manufacture that dates back to the byzantine years, but reached its peak around the 17th and 18th century. The Kastorian furs were famous and were sold not only all around the Ottoman empire but also to the countries of western Mediterranean and Russia. The Kastorian fur manufacturers and merchants traveled a lot throughout almost the whole Europe, bringing back wealth, which they decided to "invest" in beautiful mansions, where the mixture of traditional Macedonian architecture and western elements created a unique architectonic style
