China: Gold bodhisattva images at the Longhua Temple, Shanghai. Longhua Si and Longhua Ta (Longhua Temple and Pagoda) is Shanghai’s largest Buddhist temple and is the finest ancient monument in the city. It dates from 247 CE and was built by the Emperor Sun Quan in honour of his mother. It has since been destroyed and rebuilt several times. The temple site consists of seven halls that are all used for religious purposes. The 60-m (197-ft), seven-storey tower was rebuilt in 977.
