Burkholderia pseudomallei bacterium, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This rods-shaped bacterium moves using its thread-like flagella (lower frame). This bacterium is the cause of melioidosis, predominately a disease of tropical climates, especially Southeast Asia. The bacteria causing melioidosis are spread through contaminated water and soil. Burkholderia pseudomallei is a potential agent for biological warfare and biological terrorism. The illness can be an acute or localized infection, an acute pulmonary infection, acute bloodstream infection, or chronic suppurative infection. Treatment is with antibiotics. Magnification: x22,000 when printed 10cm high.
