RNA-editing enzyme combined with RNA. Computer model showing the mRNA-editing enzyme, APOBEC-1 (apolipoprotein B mRNA editing enzyme, catalytic polypeptide 1), interacting with mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid). APOBEC enzymes catalyse the breakdown (deamination) of the amino acid cytidine in nucleic acids (DNA - deoxyribonucleic acid, and RNA), changing it to uridine. APOBEC-1 works in conjuction with ACF (APOBEC-1 complementation factor). Different APOBEC members use this deamination process to achieve diverse human biological functions, such as inhibiting the replication of HIV.
