"Buffalo operation". On October 20, has started in the Danube Delta, in the Odessa region (Ukraine) there were water buffalo. In October of this year in the village of Orlovka (Reni district, Odessa region), which is located in the region of the Danube Delta, it was created an experimental herd of water buffalo Carpathian type (Carpathian buffalo this subspecies water buffalo or domestic Asian water buffalo - Bubalus bubalis). The idea to restore the herd of buffalo in the Danube region belongs to the "Odessa Center for Regional Studies" jointly with the National Ecological Centre of Ukraine, with the support of the WWF, in the framework of «Climate Forum East II» project (CFE II). 14 water buffaloes got the new home in Danube Delta Region in Ukraine. They came from Transcarpathia where the biggest in the country group of buffalo is left. The previous master of buffaloes – Michel Jacobi – came from Germany to Ukraine to renew the buffalo population in the Carpathian mountains. He will teach locals of Orlovka how to take care of buffaloes, make cheese from their milk and so on. The creation of an experimental herd of buffaloes in the Danube Delta is a pilot project to show how the unproductive territories in the region can be used giving profit to local communities. Buffalos can give a lot of eco services and are expected to improve the state of Danube Delta wetlands and lakes. They are natural ameliorators as they support small river channels by eating water plants and cleaning silted parts. If there is no open water bodies buffaloes can create themselves small lakes that attract birds, reptiles and invertebrates and serve as biodiversity centers. Also these animals are more used to new climate conditions and more resilient to diseases. Buffalos will also attract tourists to an eco park that will be created near Orlovka village in the wetlands of Kartal lake.
