G EiNtKAL VliiVV of BOPPART Cathedrals and Churches of the Rhine In the fourteenth century the town was a free imperial city ; but, following uponpolitical dissension with its neighbours, itwas returned to the guardianship of the Arch-bishop of Treves. Previously it would appear that the inhab-itants had not been very religious, but thearchbishop was able to induce them to buildhim a chateau here as a place of temporaryresidence; the first service, says the chron-icle of the time, ^ which we have rendered ourgracious master.
