Asian hornet hunting at a beehive. This hornet, a member of the invasive Asian hornet species, Vespa velutina, is at right, with honeybees emerging from the beehive at left. This hornet, and others (seen in background), will capture, kill and dismember the bees and carry them off to feed their larvae. Once a beehive is found by this species, the entire population of bees can be killed within hours. This hornet, also called the Asian predatory wasp, first appeared in France in around 2004, and has been spreading since then. Photographed in the Bordeaux region of France, in 2010.
