AUTOMATIC SIGNALS ON THE CHESTER SHORTLINE The Chester Short Line, which is operated by thePhiladelphia Rapid Transit Company, extends fromCity Hall subway in Philadelphia to Third and MarketStreets, Chester, a distance of 14% miles. The route islargely on private right-of-way and is double trackedexcept for two single track stretches, totaling about21/4s miles. Cars on this route, No. 37, have a headwayof fifteen minutes in each direction. A second route,No. 83, operates every ten minutes on one of these. At Eddystone, near Chester, the Baldwin Locomo-tive Works is located, and to serve this plant trippersare run in the morning and at night to City Hall sub-way. Some of these are stored on Morton Avenue spur,shown on the attached diagrams, and enter the lastsingle track block in the middle, as many as four some-times following in succession. Other trippers areturned at Saville Avenue and also at No. 10 Switch. Elmwood Avenue and Island Road is a loop terminusfor several lines, and the single track begins at thispoint on Island Road. At Lyons—y2 mile south—thereis a through turnout, and at Eastwick Avenue—V2 milefurther—the double track is resumed, which continuesfor about 6V2 miles. On Saturday and Sunday after-noons the headway over this portion as far as DarbyCreek is reduced to seven and
