Nuclear Test Ban Treaty signing. US President John F. Kennedy (seated) signing the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty on 7th October 1963 in the White House Treaty Room, Washington DC, USA. Surrounding him are various senators and other US politicians. US Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson is at far right. This treaty banned tests of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere, in space and underwater, while still allowing underground tests. The treaty, which was initially signed by the UK, USSR and USA, was developed in response to worldwide concerns about radioactive fallout from over 50 nuclear tests that had been conducted since 1945.
