On the morning of September nineteenth, 1777,Burgoyne divided his forces into three columns andmarched upon the American encampment, deter-mined to force his way past the army of Gates andon to Albany. General Phillips with the heavypark of artillery followed the river road and wasguarded on the east by General Riedesel who skirtedthe river bank on his left. These generals advancedstraight toward the works with which the Ameri-cans defended the pass between the river and theircamp on Bemis Heights. A central column underBurgoyne advanced at the same time over the hillsto attack the Americans in front while a thirdunder Fraser marched through the forests still far-ther to the west cutting as it went a part of what isnow the road from Quaker Springs to Schuylerville. l»f rBottte oj Saratoga. £1?-*- 65 It was Burgoynes plan that this most western col-umn having made a circuit around the head of theravine should fall upon the left or west of theAmerican position while Burgoyne attacked it infront and Phillips and Riedesel kept the Americansoccupied at the river bank. It was not thoughtthat the American works which were hastily thrownup could stand artillery and it was expectedthat when the Americans were driven in on the hillsby the combined attacks of Burgoyne and Fraser,Riedesel and Phillips would be able to force theirway through the American right to the rivers edgeand so continue the march toward Albany. Therewere to be signal guns fired when Fraser had com-pleted his more roundabout march and at thismoment the combined attack was to begin. But the English were not destined to see theAmerican works that day. By mid-day Burgoynehad reached a point a little north of Freemans farm, one of those settlers clearings to be found here a
