Figure 17 tube sheet but is also expanded past the edge of thehole, both on the inside and outside of the sheet, thussecurely binding the tube in the sheet and causing it toact as a Referring to Fig. 16, S S is the tubesheet, R R shows the expanded ridge on the tubeinside the sheet, and T T indicates the manner inwhich the end of the tube is expanded and beaded overonto the outer edge of thehole. The Dudgeon rollertube expander, shown inFig. 19, consists of a hol-low plug having a sleeveor cap at one end thatbears against the outsideof the sheet, thus servingas a guide to the rollerwhen in use. Three cavi- Figure 18 ties are cut longitudinally in the plug, and into each one of these cavities a rolleris inserted which is free to revolve. These rollers can. 56 LOCOMOTIVE ENGINEERING also move a short distance outward from the center of the plug. In using this expander the plug is in-serted into the mouth of the tube as far as the capwill permit, A tapered mandrel is then driven intothe central opening, and the rollers are forced outagainst the inner surface of the tube. The mandrelis then slowly turned around by means of a short steelrod inserted into one of the holes shown in the head(see Fig, 19). This causes the plug to revolve, aswell as the rollers which bear hard against the tube, and expand it so as to fill the hole in the sheet. The Dudgeon expander is also a very efficient toolfor repairing leaky tubes. Cast iron or steel ferrules
