Knight of the Order of Calatrava in ceremonial robes.

The Order of Calatrava was founded in Castile in the 12th century as a military branch of the Cistercian family. It was named for the Arabic name of a castle retaken from the Moslems in 1147. In the Cistercian Order, then only recently formed (1098), there had been a large number of knights or sons of knights. In Calatrava, on the contrary, those who had been monks became knights. Handcolored copperplate engraving of a knight from a religious military order from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages" (1796).
