Whipped Peter or Gordon, was an escaped slave who fled 40 miles over the course of 10 days before reaching Union soldiers of the XIX Corps who were stationed in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His story was told in the movie "Emancipation" starring Will Smith. Photo by McPherson and Oliver, 1863
