But at Paguate, anIndian town five miles from Seboyeta,we fell into the hands of the Govern-ment doctor from Laguna and thatGood Samaritan, Miss Dissette,who took us into her home and fortwo weeks your humble servant en-joyed that luxury, a dry bed and adry house, where under the care ofDoctor Jones, the Misses Dissetteand Davis she rallied. To thesethree she owes her most profoundgratitude for they really saved herlife. Really this years experience is. In the past ourbeloved Seboyetaeither achieved orhad thrust upon her the reputationof being the mostnotorious spot inBloody ValenciaCounty. Whethershe won her fame byfair means or foulmay never be knownbut we do know thatduring the past ninemonths she has livedup to her our schoolhas been smaller ourwork has been harder this year thanlast. It has not been what we have donebut what we have not been able todo, that has exhausted us. Scarcelya day, never a week, has passedwithout some experience that threat-ened to crush us into black work grows harder and theburden heavier as we learn the se-crets of the town. The responsi-bility of work grows so appallinglyas we see our dearest children, thechildren on whom we have spentthe most time and labor fall a preyto all that is loathsome.
