On the other hand, very manyobservers maintain that the chancroid is due to aspecific virus, and though at some future time theexistence of a specific micro-organism may be satisfac-torily proved, up to the present this has not beendone. In menit is most often found on the glans and prepuce; inwomen, on the internal surface of the labia raajora andminora. In both sexes it is often multiple. Its secretionis readily auto-inoculable. The soft chancre appearsYery soon after exposure to contagion, in the form^ofa small reddish patch ; this becomes swollen, and givesplace to a pustule which soon breaks and is succeededby an ulcer. The pustular stage may be wanting; anexcoriation or crack may be the first appearance. Inwhichever way developed, the ulcer increases in sizeup to a certain point, and then remains at first circalar in form,
