Shown here is a Phyrgian aulos (flute) dating to the Roman Imperial period, the 1st to 2nd centuries AD. This flute is one of the more immediately recognizable objects from antiquity, resembling the modern oboe and recorder. This aulos, carved of precious ivory belongs to a category of luxury items, as most auloi were carved from reeds. Phyrgia was a kingdom in the west central part of Anatolia, in what is now Asian Turkey.
