Vain de-lusion—F ourcrowded into asmall tent on aJuly night, meant warmth and all too soon we Degaato realize that we were in a first cousiato a Turkish bath ! Then, slap fromGeorge, slap from Jack, muttered expost-ulations from Fred, and with one accordwe all consigned some invisible tormentto perdition. Tliis proved to be a speciesof gnat that divided its attentions impar-tially between the horses and us. VVithall this we were so annoyed thatsleep was out of the question and thefirst streak of dawn found us A FINE BRITISH COLUMBIA FALLS 233 crawling out and preparing soon as possible we were off againand distaining short cuts and easy roadswe chose the stiff but direct climb downthe mountain side to the foot of the falls-. ox THE TRAIL As we got along we were delighted tofind that the difficulties were moreimaginary than real, and an hours hardwork brought us to our gaol, where westood in awe and admiration before one of the grandest sights in the Creek was full to the banks, thesummer freshet being on, and thisgreat volume of water, coming fromregions beyond unknown to us, over some rapids into ahuge pot and then raging roundplunged out over a straightdrop of at least seventy-five feet, driving a huge column of spraydown the creek which wouldvery shortly have soaked us toto the skin had we not soughtshelter beneath the rocks atone side. Gazing in delight and won-derment at this magnificentspectacle, we felt amply repaidfor our trip and agree that Brit-tish Columbia contained nogrander view than that beforeus. Soon the camera was plac-ed to take the picture, but toour disgust we found that thesuns rays would not strikedown there for a long time, sofor three hours
