Differentadjustments of the coil give results whichwill be treated upon later. Phosphorus Tube. • Messrs. Siemens and Halske manufac-tured a tube which allowed of a slightvariation of vacuum by using the vapor ofphosphorus. An auxiliary tube containingphosphorus was added to the main tube, andupon heat being applied to it by means ofa lamp, vapor is given off, which materiallyreduces the vacuum of the main tube. Whenthe opposite result is desired part of thecurrent is diverted through the auxiliarytube, and the vapor is caused to solidify itselfupon the walls of the Fig. yZ ^Roentgen Rays and Radiography. 241 The Crookes Tube. The most satisfactory tube for X-raywork is one where the vacuum is readilyadjustable. Reference to Fig. 73 shows theQueen form. A small bulb, containing achemical which gives off vapor when heatedand reabsorbs it when cooled, is directlyconnected to the main tube and surroundedby an auxiliary tube, which is exhausted toa low vacuum. In the auxiliary tube thecathode is opposite to the above-mentionedbulb, so that any discharge through it willheat the bulb by the bombardment of thecathode rays. The cathode is connected toa spark point, which can be adjusted to anydistance from the cathode of the main anode of the small tube is directly con-nected to that of the main tube. When thetube is put into operation the vacuu
