Great Gatehouse, Battle Abbey, East Sussex, 1937. The Benedictine abbey of Battle was founded by William the Conqueror on the site of the Battle of Hastings. The Great Gatehouse is the best preserved portion of the medieval abbey, and survived as the gatehouse of the later houses which occupied the site.
