Brain motor cortex pathways. Artwork of a lateral (from the side) view of a human brain, showing neural pathways (pink lines) from the motor cortex of the brain to the brainstem and spinal cord. These pyramidal pathways are the corticospinal and corticobulbar tracts. The former controls conscious movement of the upper limbs, body and legs. The latter controls face, neck and head muscles. The pathways arise in the primary motor cortex (coloured areas) in the frontal lobe and on its border with the parietal lobe. The red lines indicate the sections shown in C016/6532. From top to bottom, the horizontal lines are at the level of the: mid brain, pons, medulla, and spinal cord.
