An early pithouse built C6/7thAD by Basketmakers (Anasazi, Ancestral Puebloans) at Mesa Verde, Colorado: underground living room with firepit, and holes for four posts which supported a roof of wooden beams, brush and soil. Antechamber to rear was used for storage bins and pits. The stone basin (metate) was used for grinding grains. Antechambers often contained a symbolic hole or earth navel (sipapu) through which the ancestors emerged to live on the earth's surface. Kivas (subterranean ceremonial chambers) are thought to have evolved from these sunken houses utilizing the insulation of the ground.
