Carpal tunnel syndrome. Colour Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan of a hand suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. Bones of the thumb are at top (white); at lower left (blue, pink) are tendons and ligaments of the hand and wrist which are affected by carpal tunnel syndrome. The condition results from pressure on a nerve which passes into the hand via a gap (the \carpal tunnel\") under these ligaments of the wrist. Impulses from the blocked nerve cause numbness, tingling and pain in the fingers. The syndrome may occur in arthritis or acromegaly, or be caused by trauma to the hands in repetitive strain injury (RSI)."
