Rural farmhouse in Bungamati, Kathmandu, with grain harvest
Bungamati is a small village in the south of the Kathmandu valley in Nepal. Taken in autumn 2004 when rice had been harvested and put out for drying. Subsistence farming is still a vital part of the economy. The brick buildings are traditional and the valley soil is used to make the bricks. Corn cobs and chillies are also hung out to dry from windows. Blue skies and fluffy white clouds are typical at this time of year, after the monsoon rains have cleared the air. The woman walks over the grain sorting it with her feet, turning it regularly so that it all gets some sun and dries out.
