The trees of different varietiesvary considerably in size, vigor, form, type of twig produced,and habit of bearing, but those of any particular variety arevery uniform in these respects. In size, the trees of a variety may be habitually large, likethose of the Northern Spy, or small, like those of the Olden-burg. They may be characteristically vigorous or they maytend to be weak. In form, the trees of a variety may behabitually spreading or habitually upright; the trees of a num-ber of varieties tend to be upright, however, until loads of fruitcause them to be spreading; on the other hand, the trees ofsome varieties have the upright habit so strongly fixed thateven after many years of bearing they still remain the case of some varieties the twigs are exceedingly slende
