Very showy. 1 to li feet, 75c.; 2 to 2i feet, Soulang-eana—A low spreading tree, covered early in the spring, before the leaves appear, with an abundance of large flowers, purple at the base and white in the .upper half of the petals, and appearing in such quantities as to completely cover the tree. One of the most showy and popular of our flowering trees. Should be planted early in spring. 2 to 3 feet, | ; 3 to 4 feet, $ speciosa — Resembles the Soulangeana in growth and foliage, but the flowers are a little smaller and of a lighter color, fully a week later, and remain in perfect condition upon the tree longer than those of any other Chinese variety. Its form is low and shrub-like : its flowers are pure white; the petals are long, narrow, and arranged in double rows, and the fragrance is delicate.
