Early morning view SE of St Andrew's Church, Steyning, West Sussex, England, UK, on the site of a church established by St Cuthman in the C8th. There was an Anglo-Saxon monastery here, taken over by Norman Benedictine monks from Fécamp who built the present C12th nave using Caen stone specially imported from France. The W tower, with flint & stone chequer work, dates from c. 1600. Around 1750 a new chancel was built by the Duke of Norfolk on the site of the original chancel & ruinous central tower. Travelling as a mendicant hermit with his invalid mother in a specially made wheelbarrow couch, Cuthman eventually settled at Steyning where he built a hut & timber church. His missionary work was not popular with the locals (Steyning may have been a pagan sanctuary, it takes its name from Stenningas meaning the People of the Stone) but his church & shrine became a famous place of pilgrimage & miracles, especially for cures of the crippled & sick. In 1938 a strangely marked stone 6ft long was found being used as a step at the E entrance to the churchyard.
