For over an hour and a half we balancedalong the prostrate trunks, into some of which steps hadbeen cut, but, arduous as was the ascent, we naturallyfound the descent in the evening a more hazardousundertaking; yet all emerged from the ordeal with soundlimbs. We arrived a little before noon and found some ofthe natives busy preparing their midday meal in andaround a cool shed on top of a hill from where an extensiveview was obtained of the past and present fields of thecountry. Near by was a watch-tower raised on top ofupright logs. At one side of it four bamboos of differentsizes were hanging horizontally over each other, whichproduced different notes when struck, and probably hadbeen placed there for the purpose of frightening birdsaway.
