A Good Templar lodgewas instituted about this time at EastWeare, and is still in a flourishing-condition. No town in the state can boast of ahigher degree of intelligence, in pro-portion to its population, than Weare,ind this fact is largely due to theinfluence of the school establishedhere jn 1834, by Moses A. Cart-land, a native of Lee. For fourteenyears this school was successfullycarried on and numbered among itspupils representatives from nearlyevery New England and Middle stateand at one time several from themother country,—an English fam- ily who were sent here
