Henderson petrel, an endemic seabird of Henderson Island, South Pacific


Henderson petrel Pterodroma atrata, an endemic seabird of Henderson Island, South Pacific, photographed near its nesting site. Unlike many other related species which nest in burrows, the Henderson petrel nests on the surface of this coralline island, sheltered by vegetation. The species roams widely at sea, feeding mostly on squid.
