Illustration showing the location of the Baring Head Atmospheric Research Station (red dot), Wellington, New Zealand. This site has been monitoring atmospheric carbon dioxide levels since 1972 as part of a global monitoring network. The site was chosen as its location means that air sampled from southerly winds (arrows) has only blown over areas where there is no human activity.
