British Canals in Wartime- Transport in Britain, 1944 A teacher explains a point to one of her pupils at a school held on board an old canal barge on the Grand Union Canal at Hayes in Middlesex. The original caption states that there are several places along Britain's canal network where special schools cater for 'boatmen's children'. The caption explains that this site in Hayes is where the Grand Union Canal Carrying Company have their repair and maintenance shops and 'when the boats are in for maintenance or overhaul, or are resting between trips, children attend the school'.
