Air Brake Signal and Steam Hose Dis-mantling and Assembling Machine The accompanying illustration shows anew development in railroad shop appli-ances for dismantling and assembling railroad shops are not so wellequipped as they should be with appliancesfor this work. With ordinary shop toolsvery frequently clamps are distorted, strained, cracked or broken. The Cov-ington machine eliminates any possibilityof injury to the attachments, and all hosefittings including the clamps are recovered, and a much better assembling job isturned out than can be done by hand as-sembling, besides the labor saving in com-parison with other methods. In this re-gard it may be stated that on a test oneman dismantled 100 air hose within anhour and assembled 25 air hose readyfor service in one hour. Any man ofaverage intelligence can become expert inthe use of machine within ten Improved Arc Welding A new arc system of welding is nowbeing employed by several companies whoreport that it effects maximum savings inthe cost and time of manufacture and re-pair of metal parts. Uniform success issaid to attend the welding of metals ofvarious characteristics, such as cast, mal-leable and wrought iron, cast and rolledsteel, bronze and brass, etc. The new sys-tem is the only one, so it is claimed, pro-ducing constant heat per unit area in theweld due to the following points: 1. Alimited low voltage output from the gen-erator which prevents injury from highvoltage and assures a short arc. 2. Main-tained constant current supply to thewelder. The current flowing through theelectrode is the same whether the currentis short-circuited or flowing in the formof an electric arc. 3. Welding metals sodesigned that they furnish the requiredductility and tensile strength within pr
