The vertiginous cliffs of the Rock of Vellan dominate the village of Plan de Baix and surrounding fields, the Vercors Regional Park, La Drôme, France.
This rugged mountainous countryside is part of the remote Vercors, a massif of mountains and plateaux in the Rhône-Alpes region of France. The Vercors massif and it’s surrounding areas are protected as a regional park, which was officially designated in 1970. The park is important for the protection and conservation of the distinctive mountain environment with its alpine wildlife. At the same time these priorities must be reconciled with agriculture, tourism and the needs of the local human population. The Vercors is particularly good for a wide variety of outdoor leisure pursuits, such as hiking, camping, cycling, climbing and caving.
