ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- An F-22 Raptor takes off from here while Mount Redoubt spews steam into the morning ski. Mount Redoubt, which is 100 miles south-west of Elmendorf, has been active for months, and is keeping emergency managers and early warning personnel on the edge of their seats with periodic eruptions and discharges of steam. So far, only a small amount of volcanic ash has fallen on Elmendorf. The F-22 Raptor belongs to the 525nd Fighter Squadron and flown by Arctic Reservist from the 477th Fighter Group.
