Garfield.—Late in the afternoon of September 21, 18S1, the plateau tothe east of the Capitol was massed with military organizations. The officersof the armv and navy were drawn up in two lines leading to the foot of thegrand central steps, which were crowded with people save where a passage -wav had been kept open to the bronze doors. The grounds were crowdedwith spectators, but all was as still as night. Before the steps was a hearsedrawn by six magnificent gray horses. A rich casket was dislodged and. c Cl.
