Twisted Seedlings Nursery plants with stems twisted at the base are offrequent occurrence. In the most general case the stem 192 THE RUBBER TREE chap. makes a complete turn, either in a regular curve (see tlie fifthfrom the left in Fig. 27), or in a combination of curvesand abruptly angular bends; in other cases there are twocomplete turns, and in a single instance three have beenobserved. The curves are rarely all in the same direction, and the resulting combination is frequently so complicatedthat analysis fails to afford any adequate explanation. Itmay be noted that the examples given here had been grownin free soil, and do not owe their origin to the presence ofstones in the nursery. As a rule, these twisted plants are discovered when theyare about to be planted out in the field ; at that time the coUsare generally fused together, and would ultimately, if theplants had been allowed to grow, have formed a solid mass atthe base of the stem.
