Deeds of valor : how America's heroes won the medal of honor : personal reminiscences and records of officers and enlisted men who were awarded the congressional medal of honor for most conspicuous acts of bravery in battle : combined with an abridged history of our country's wars . t for the time being, whereupon the pony would double up like aball, make a bound into the air, coming down stiff-legged, jump about over theprairie, and repeating this exercise with lightning rapidity in almost every directionat the same time; then the soldiers hat would fall, and before many minutes hewould follow suit, and frequently the pony would not stop until he had freed him-self from the saddle; or, sometimes he would gallop around over the prairie andcome back to the herd with the saddle underneath. Two hundred soldiers on the same field endeavoring to subdue the same numberof wild horses created a scene of excitement which was not only humorous but alsosomewhat dangerous. Fortunately they did not have far to fall, and the groundwas covered with a heavy crop of green grass. This scene continued until the com-mand was completely mounted and the ponies and infantry had become betteracquainted, and by that time we were ready to take up our return march to thecantonment. ^ i #-,.
