Klemens Lopfleb. Leo XI (Alessandro Ottaviano de Medici),Pope, b. at Florence in 1535; d. at Rome 27 April,1605, on the twenty-seventh day after his election tothe papacy. His mother, Francesca Salviati, was adaughter of Giacomo Salviati and Lucrezia Medici,the latter being a sister of Leo X. From his boyhoodhe led a life of piety and always had an earnest desire LEO 167 LEO to enter the ecclesiastical state, but could not obtainhis mothers consent. After her death he was ordainedpriest and somewhat later Grand Duke Cosimo of Tus-cany sent him as ambassador to Pius V, a positionwhich he held for fifteen years. Gregory XIII madehim Bishop of Pistoia in 1573, Archbishop of Florencein 1574, and cardinal in 1583. Clement VIII sent Monument op Leo XIVatican Basilica, Rome in 1596, as legate to France where he did good servicefor the Church in repressing the Huguenot influence atthe court of Henry IV, and helping to restore theCatholic religion. On his return to Italy he was ap-pointed prefect of the Congregation of Bishops andRegulars. In 1600 he became Bishop of the subur-bicarian Diocese of Albano, whence he was transferredto Palestrina in 1602. Alessandro was an intimatefriend of Saint Philip Neri with whom he spent muchtime in spiritual conversation and whose advice hesought in all important matters. When Alessandrowas Tuscan ambassador at the court of Pius V Philippredicted his election to the papacy.
