Several authors^^ have writtenof the caribou fences which were con-structed to force the caribou to cross a riveror a lake at certain places accessible to thenatives, where they could be shot andspeared.^* Recent forest fires have oblit-erated these so-called fences, but in afew places near the shore, where, on accountof the moisture, the fires have not burnedto the waters edge, some few miles belowthe new dam on Exploits river at its junctionwith Red Indian lake, are to be seen thetrunks of trees felled to form a line barrier A
