CONTACT DERMATITIS

A photographic image of a person suffering from contact dermatitis, also known as dermatitis venenata. This is a skin rash resulting from exposure to either an irritating or allergic substance. In the first type, an irritant, as detergent or acid, causes a sore much like a burn. Treatment is to flush the area immediately with water. In the allergic type, the reaction is delayed. Symptoms are swelling, blisters, and large amounts of fluid in the body tissues. Treatment includes steroid creams and soothing or drying lotions.
