Hisfeatures were coarse, his form un-gainly; and there was but verylittle in his character, made visible, which was at-tractive. When only thirteen years old he joined the volun-teers of Carolina against the British invasion. In1781, he and his brother Robert were captured andimprisoned for a time at Camden. A British officerordered him to brush his mud-spattered boots. I ama prisoner of war, not your servant, was the reply ofthe dauntless boy.
