Climate change research. Atmospheric scientists lining up an ice core drill over a bore hole. The air trapped in the firn (the upper layer of frozen snow) is untainted by the atmospheric air, and thus provides direct evidence of what the composition of the atmosphere was at the time when the firn froze. This research was done as part of the EPICA project (European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica). Studying how the atmosphere has changed can lead to better models for predicting how it will change in the future. Photographed in Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica.
