Keepers at ZSL Whipsnade Zoo are preparing to celebrate two very special birthdays tomorrow –as ring-tailed lemur twins, Billy and Taffy, turn 25 today 13/3/2013 The pair, who are thought to be the oldest lemur twins in the world, will be treated to a special birthday cake made of fruit, and presents full of their favourite treats to unwrap, along with piñatas in the shape of a 25 to mark their day. Their birthday is a significant milestone as lemurs rarely live past the age of 20, and records show the oldest single ring-tailed lemur ever to have lived reached 27. Keepers credit the twins’ grand old age to a laid back lifestyle. Steve Perry said: “We’re thrilled to be celebrating Billy and Taffy’s 25th birthday. Reaching 25 is a fantastic achievement, especially as the average life span of a ring tailed lemur is generally about 20 years, and for the twins to reach that milestone together is something really special and quite unique. “Although they’ve slowed down slightly in recent years and love nothing more than sunbathing in the sunshine next to their waterfall, they’re still very inquisitive by nature and love investigating new things. “Not only will our gifts give them the chance to use their natural curiosity, they’ll enjoy them too, and we hope there are many more birthdays to come.” Billy and Taffy have lived at Whipsnade for 15 years and share their island with seven other bachelor boys who will be joining in with their birthday celebrations
