Gerard (1770-1837) was less docile to the Davidian discipline. The somewhat trivial facility of his talent made it easy for him to desert the studio for the drawing-room. It did not prevent him from executing some rather feeble compositions, but it made him a popular portraitist. He was the official painter of the aristocracy under the Empire and the Restoration, and the embroideries of the Court
