The second parallel,six luiridred yards in ad-. vance, was established July23d, by a flying-sap along thenarrow strip of shifting moon was so bright untilmidnight that no work couldbe done, but from twelve tilldawn a parapet ten feet thickand one hundred seventy-fivefeet long was completed, sixhowitzers were placed, an en-tanglement was put up a hun-dred yards in advance, and alarge bomb-proof magazinefinished in the center of an oldgraveyard.
