In the 12th century, the Knights Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem (later to become the Order of Malta) established a commandery on the hill of Poët-Laval, Drôme Provençale, France. During the crusades, it was used as a staging post and refuge for pilgrims setting off for the Holy Land.
