[Vol. XVIIL No. 12. ing 150 volts and the other from 350 volts to 450 volts. Thestorage battery was connected at the point where the last boosterfed into the line, about i mile from the terminal. The service atthis terminal is of the most exacting nature, trolley cars andtrains being sidetracked to await the crowds at the race tracksand started up, fully loaded, at short intervals. Notwithstanding. CURVE NO. 4 the heavy character of the service, by means of the battery thevoltage was maintained at a very even pressure. During the day the battery fluctuated between 1500-amp. dis-charge and 500-amp. charge, being kept practically full most ofthe time. At the periods of heaviest load, however, a completedischarge was sometimes efTected in one hour. Curve 4 shows graphically the regulation of this battery onJuly 21, 1900, between the hours of 6:45 a. m. and 11:25 p. this time variations of from 1000 amps, to 1800 amps, onthe line in the vicinity of the battery produced no greater fluctua-tions than 200 amps, on the booster at the southern station. Curve No. 5 represents a discharge taken June 15, 1900, at anaverage rate of 430 amps, for four hours and thirty-five minutes,a considerable excess over the rated capacity of the this discharge the current fluctuated between 100 amps, and 1300 amps., and the voltage averaged 474 amps. If the battery had not been used
