Jaguar XK 150 radiator and headlight. Car on display at the Lakeland Motor Museum, Cumbria

The diverse collection formerly displayed at Holker Hall has been presented afresh, together with many new additions, in new state-of-the-art premises at Backbarrow, close to Newby Bridge at the Southern tip of Lake Windermere. Offering a curious and educational atmosphere, the Museum generates intrigue, fascination and nostalgia certain to awaken many motoring memories. Over 30, 000 exhibits being preserved for posterity provide tangible evidence of our motoring heritage and provide a thoroughly enjoyable and astonishing insight into our forefather’s inventiveness and dexterity, often described as a unique microcosm of the 20th century. We provide ‘something for everyone’ including cycles, vintage, veteran and classic cars, scooters, mopeds, engines, motorcycles, a pre-war garage re-creation and perhaps the finest collection of automobilia on public display in the UK. Also on display is the Campbell Bluebird Exhibition which pays tribute to Sir Malcolm Campbell and son Donald, who between them captured 21 World land and water speed records. Highlights include full size detailed replica’s of the 1935 Bluebird car, the 1939 Bluebird boat (K4) and the famous jet powered hydroplane, Bluebird K7, in which Donald Campbell was tragically killed on Coniston Water in 1967. The Museum also traces the industrial heritage of the Leven Valley including the manufacture of Ultramarine pigment often referred to as ‘Dolly Blue, ’ the Iron Works, the Gunpowder Mills and Woodland industries.
