Several dozen members of the far right English Defence League along with supporters of other so-called patriot organisations protested in Whitehall demanding the release of Marine Sergeant Alex Blackman, known throughout his court martial as "Marine A". Blackman was convicted of the murder of a Taliban insurgent while on operations in Afghanistan. The EDL argue that the pressures of warfare mitigate against the conviction, saying that those who found him guilty do not understand the pressures faced by servicemen in combat situations. They also voiced their concern that Blackman will be singled out for persecution in prison by Muslim convicts.
