The depth is increased or diminished byturning a screw at the bottom of the foot-piece. Welchs side splints, also (Fig. 203), made of veneered gutta percha, may be used in connection with his double inclined plane, and areespecially useful in fractures occurring near the ankle-joint. Fig. B. Welchs flexible side splints. These side splints may be confined to the limb by bandages orstraps, and indeed to bandages I always give the preference. In using Welchs or Listons apparatus, it must not be inferred thatthe knee is always to be bent. These splints are designed to be usedoccasionally as single planes or as straight splints ; and there will befound many cases of fractures of the legs in which the straight posi-tion will be most suitable: this is especially true of such fractures as,occurring just below the knee-joint, have the line of fracture directedobliquely downwards and forwards. But there are many compoundfractures which demand the same extended position ; and in nearlyall cases where this form of apparatus is used as a double inclinedplane, the lower end of the splint should be elevated so that the heelshall not be much below the level of the knee. Bauers wire splints, used also for side splints (Fig. 204), when theyare formed to fit the limb accurately, possess
